Companion (2025)
Premise: A dude takes his reluctant girlfriend to hang with some friends for the weekend at a Russian mobsters' mansion in the wilderness.
Rating: I loved the shit out of all of this.
If you read my movie reviews and you find yourself generally thinking that they are of value and you see overlap in your own tastes, my biggest recommendation here is to go see this in the theater and not watch the trailer. The true premise of the movie is not what it seems and continues to evolved and several of those steps are revealed in the trailer. It is a movie designed to set up and knock down concepts but in order to get people to watch the movie, the trailer has to reveal some of that and it's a shame, but I understand.
I love movies that zig and zag, but I love it even more when those turns (they don't even have to be twists, per se) are "fair". Like, the movie didn't just pull the rug and do something out of the blue, but the movie chose to show you or tell you things and let you interpret it one way, but recontextualize things later. Everything feels earned. The movie just plays to my specific sensibilities. It's generally a light time, not particularly draining, overly serious, it's short (only like an hour and a half) and when it's all done, it has something to say. Also, for a movie with characters in tight spots, everyone acts pretty intelligently and the things that they try to better their situation are 1) clever and 2) set up ahead of time, so nothing feels like it's a deus ex machina, aside from perhaps one aspect, but I thought it was all earned.
I loved this. It's just for my tastes. I hope you enjoy it.
