In cap move, Dolphins release tackle McIntosh

The Dolphins made their first major offseason roster move to get under the 2006 salary cap Wednesday by releasing left tackle Damion McIntosh.

McIntosh had started the past 30 games for the Dolphins, but was due to earn $4.425 million in salary in 2006 with a cap number of $4.48 million. That was too much for a Dolphins team that ESPN reported is at least $19 million over the 2006 cap, which ultimately will be set between $92 million and $95 million.

The Dolphins could have gotten some cap relief if the NFL and its players union reached agreement on a new labor pact. But such a deal now appears unlikely to happen after negotiations between the two sides broke off Tuesday. That will force teams with cap problems like the Dolphins to releasing a slew of veteran players to get under the cap by the NFL-mandated deadline of 4 p.m. Thursday.

The free-agent signing period is scheduled to begin Friday.

In addition to the release of tackle Damion McIntosh, the Miami Dolphins also terminated the contracts of cornerbacks Reggie Howard and Sam Madison, and safety Tebucky Jones.

Madison played his entire nine-year career with the Dolphins. Unlike Madison, the tenures of Howard and Jones were a lot shorter. Howard started his two-year run under Dave Wannstedt in 2004. Jones signed on prior to this past season, but only played in six games due to injury

Nothing surprising here. I think these were all expected cuts. I merged both the threads about players being cut.

Thank god Reggie Howard is gone. Brian will have to find a new scapegoat and player he can bitch about.

Cutting McIntosh saved us $3.8 million against the cap, cutting Tebucky Jones saved another $6.5 million.

None of these cuts are surprising.  I'm especially glad we're rid of Reggie Howard.  Now, the question is who will play opposite of Schulters at the safety position.  Will it be Bell, a rookie, or some free agent?

The Jared Lazareth / Herald Stagg should be ashamed of themselves.  Who lets something like that go to print.  It's missing a noun!

Lorenzo Diamond was also released today.

WTF???  Why did they get rid of him?  He seemed to be adjusting well in Saban's blocking TE scheme!!!

all I'll say is of those cut so far, I wish sam madison the best, he spent his whole career in aqua and orange, and I hope the dude is successful wherever he turns up next. How messed up would it be if he went to KC, and then they had essentially our secondary(knight, madison, surtain)

All they would need to do is coax Brock Marion out of retirement.

There's a slim chance Sam will be back after a big pay cut, but not likely.  I'll be sad to see Sam go, but I won't miss his personal fouls for mouthing off at the refs.
