According to the Herald, a high ranking Dolphins source vehemently denied any reports that they had asked Olindo Mare to take a pay cut.

Now that I've had time to think about it, field position is very important, and comparing Mare to Vanderjagt on kickoffs, Mare wins by a country mile.   Any thoughts?

My initial thought was, "great, let's get Vanderjagt" (ok, I admit it, I added "idiot kicker").

Vanderjagt hits something like 90% of his kicks, whereas Mare is more like 80%.

Then I started thinking about it. With the 30 or so field goal attempts in a season, that's a measly 9 points more, Vanderjagt will give us. Plus he doesn't kick as far (field goals and kickoffs), plus the 90% is probably not going to happen here since he is used to kicked in a dome...

I'm not saying we should pay Mare through the nose, but if they're going to cost us about the same and Vanderjagt can't do kickoffs, I say we stick with Mare.

Damn.   Cry

Mare has been on my sh*t list for a few years now.  Missing easy FG's, sigh,  funny how it all started happenning after he got married.   Grin   But I digress...

Mare > Vanderjagt, as a football player.

Being a kicker is more than just FG accuracy.

I don't see the big deal here about releasing Mare.

It's STILL a kicker, people!!  You can pick up any schlep at any time to kick your FG's.  Look at Neil Rackers - from worst K in football with the Bengals to the ALL-STAR K for the NFC with the Cardinals!!!

Lot's of games come down to a final kick.  The Cowboys were really hurt last year by the kicking game.  Parcels will agree with your statement "can pick up a schlep to kick FG's"......but I think the point is to find someone that can "make" field goals.   It's demoralizing to drive the field, take time off the clock and then come away with nothing when the kicker misses.  Mare does two things I like - he gets a lot of touchbacks on kick offs and he can still hit a kick of more than 50 yards.  I know he's had a couple of high profile misses, but I was happy with his play last year.  We should only get rid of Mare if we have someone better ready to sign.

Sure - ask Dallas or the Giants how easy it is to find a kicker that kicks WELL.

Please let mare go. Dallas can swoop right in and take him. Why in the hell would you let a guy go who's amongest the league leaders in touchbacks?

Nah, we think it would be more fun too see you guys go through another season of Billy Cundiff, Shaun Suisham, and Jose Cortez.  Besides how much truth is really in the reports about Olindo?
