Dolphins re-sign McKinney

The Dolphins re-signed center Seth McKinney on Wednesday to a two-year, $5 million contract.

Agent Ralph Cindrich said McKinney will receive a $915,000 signing bonus along with a $585,000 base salary for 2006. McKinney is slated to receive $1 million in base salary in 2007 plus a $2.5 million roster bonus.

"He liked (Dolphins coach) Nick Saban and really liked his offensive line coach," said Cindrich, referring to Hudson Houck. "I think he felt like he progressed more in one year than he had previously and would benefit from staying."

The re-signing of McKinney, who had free-agent visits with New Orleans and Houston, will likely result in Rex Hadnot returning to his starting spot at right guard. Hadnot had started at center the final three games last season when McKinney went on injured reserve with a leg injury.

The Dolphins had considered other interior line options, hosting center Kevin Mawae and guard Stephen Neal on free-agent visits, before re-signing McKinney.

I really feel like we could have upgraded at center through the draft or by signing one of the three: Mike Flanagan, Jeff Mitchell, Andy McCollum.  But with Seth we get an adequate starter, though nothing special.

this doesn't mean we can't get a center in the draft

Not a particularly good move.  Re-signing SweatHog McKinney doesn't make our line better.  It makes our line the same, which is not good enough.

Why?

I don't get this.

Wade Smith will get the center job anyway, Seth will be moved to Guard.

Bingo!!!!  McKinney did sub for Jaime Nails at guard at the end of 2002 and played relatively well.  Good call.  If neither one of them can adapt to their new positions on the line, then chalk up two more Wanny draft busts.

Sweaty wasn't as bad as a center this past season as I thought he was going to be.  He will probably be moved to the guard position, and Couch Houck will let Rex Hadnot and Wade Smith duke it out for the starting center job.

I think this signing is a smokescreen. We will draft Mangold at #16.

If Saban brings Spielman in to help with the draft, Miami will trade next year's first rounder to move up two slots to take Mangold at #14.  Grin

Are you saying Mangold = Vernon Carey?

I'm not ready to sell Vernon as being a total bust yet...but I think Mangold has as much talent and more game-intelligence than Vernon did. Mangold will be a solid pro...I'm convinced of it.

Carey is an average starter at RT.  Completely and utterly average--but that doesn't make him a bust, it just makes him a bad pick at # 20 or whatever it was we drafted him.
