Ex-Ram Martin new QB option for Dolphins
By GREG A. BEDARD

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, April 05, 2006

While the Dolphins continued to work Tuesday on a trade for quarterback Joey Harrington, the team started to make backup plans by showing interest in former Rams quarterback Jamie Martin.

The Dolphins have agreed to the framework of a two-year contract with Harrington but are having trouble meeting the Lions' asking price in a trade. According to a source, the Lions want the Dolphins' third- or fourth-round pick in the April 29 draft. The Dolphins have resisted because they have previously traded away their second-, fifth- and sixth- round picks.

The Bengals, who at this time are only offering a one-year contract, also have balked at giving in to the Lions, who are letting it be known that they are prepared to wait until the summer to trade Harrington in order to get what they want.

That has led the Dolphins to Martin, a 36-year-old veteran who has played for five teams in his 12-year career. He started a career-high five games for St. Louis last season — the Rams went 4-1 — and completed 70.1 percent of his passes (124 of 177) for 1,277 yards and five touchdowns. Martin threw seven interceptions and had a passer rating of 83.5.

I think Harrington is the better option, but I don't think we can give up a pick that high for a back-up. I have a funny feeling Martin ends out being the guy.

Either Martin or Tommy Maddox.  I don't know why the Dolphins were suddenly turned off by him.  I wouldn't give up any more picks this season.  Just sign a guy outright.

Definitely Martin over Maddox, and Harrington over either of those 2 (if he is released in June).  Last season Martin at least showed everyone he can still win, the only thing Maddox displayed was how to give the ball to the other team without punting...

Who did we give up our 5th round pick for, again?

2nd was Daunte, 6th was Lemon.

I'd be ok with giving up our 5th next year for Harrington. No more this year, though. (Unless they'll settle for our 7th)
