("fob somebody off with something", although that term is hardly modern US vernacular).

Good call on the verbiage, but I think the meaning behind the phrase fits this almost perfectly.

...and for those of us who spent significant time stationed at RAF bases in the UK, the term "fob off" is perfectly clear.   Wink

Actually they refer to the site as the "best pro football scoop on the internet". Scoop by definition is an exclusive NEWS story acquired by luck or initiative. So indeed they are referring to themselves as a news source.
I don't want to argue with dictionary.com, but I always thought a scoop was the tidbit of information that led to an exclusive story.

I always considered a "scoop" to be a tidbit of unique information...but "factual" information. If they had an insider in Daunte's doctor's office during his rehab...THAT would be a scoop. If it's just a guy speculating what could happen, that's not as much a scoop as it is...well, speculation.

I believe a scoop is an actual news release; that is, a tidbit of info doesn't become a "scoop" until you release news based on it.

For example, if FOX obtained info today on Ricky's hearing (but didn't release any news about it, for whatever reason), and ESPN obtained the same info tomorrow (and released it the same day), ESPN got the "scoop," even though FOX had the info first.

Take a look at the web address:
http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

They claim to be a rumor mill. I check them out quite a bit, but usually its just for the links which they post to news stories from other NFL cities. Same reason I check out www.4for4.com

yeah i cant stand that site.....its pure lies, they're never right on anything
That is incorrect.  They just recently reported Leinart was about to fire Leigh Steinberg.  Steinberg replied their relationship would be a long one.

Of course it lasted only a few more days.

Lets also remember that you are reading it in a section called "Rumor Mill"

All rumors do not become truths, but that does not mean they were not out there.

As I posted on another site.

Had Miami signed Brees & not traded for Culpepper, a thread like this would be "Glad we did not trade for this broken down bum"

Its only because its Miami.

Edge, thanks for the post, but as others have said, PFT always takes every report one step further (and often blatantly makes stuff up just to drum up traffic).

This is the same site that reported that the Dolphins were changing their team logo to match that of the stadium.

No they didn't.  People need to remember that these guys are smartarses & sometime make fun of things.

Culpepper mentioned yesterday that he may not be ready for week 1, but no where reputable has it mentioned that he's "out for the season" (which hasn't even started yet, by the way)
Probably because no one has said it will be out.  PFT reported that they are hearing concerns that he might.

Oh geez ... here we go again.  *sigh*
Right.  It's not the ProFootballValidatedNewsSite.  It's a "RUMOR MILL!"  They heard a rumor and they passed it on.

Anyone else experiencing deja vu?

Thank you RTW.    It seems like some forget is a rumor mill section.  Not the gospel section.

The reason their is speculation out there is because prior to the trade Culpepper said he would be ready.  Now he backed off that comment.

The media being the media runs with things & are not wondering if his injury is not healing right.  Something Miami would not want out until they have found a QB that can play this season.

Quote
The broader question, as we see it, is whether the new Dolphin from the stadium logo eventually will replace the team's traditional cartoon-style, helmet-wearing marine mammal on the side of the player helmets.

OK...

Now, you may say "they're just posing the question..." but guess how everyone on this board who read it understood that?  Yeah, its written very sketch-ily, in order to drum up more rumors. Roll Eyes
No, one would not say they are just posing a question.  They are.

No where do they say the Phins will be changing their logo to that one & if anyone read it that way, then a class in Reading Comprehension 101 is something to check into.

They were simply making fun of the Phins cartoonish helmet logo.

Please see above - I realize that they posed it as a question.  But go look at how the public read it.  That's a stupid thing to even bring up, and it was written in a way that someone could take it as "oh my god, they're changing their logo to that?"

A news reporting source shouldn't be speculating, rather than reporting the news.  Clearly, PFT isn't a news reporting source.

That's my point.
No they are not a ESPN.  That is why they have a rumor mill section.

None of those sites would ever report something heard over the grapevine.   They would want to make sure the story is true & then charge you for it on their inside ESPN.

Do we really need five posts back to back by one person to make the same point?

Cry Do we really need someone whining about another posting on a message board?  If you do not want to read it, then don't.

No need to make a post crying about it.
