Vikings hire Spielman as personnel chief

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Vikings hired Rick Spielman as vice president for player personnel Tuesday.

Spielman left the Miami Dolphins in June 2005 after five seasons with the club, including one as general manager. Before that, he was with Detroit from 1990-96 and Chicago from 1997-99. Spielman left the Dolphins as he became increasingly irrelevant with new coach Nick Saban having complete control over the roster.

As general manager, Spielman was widely criticized throughout the 2004 season for personnel decisions. Miami went 4-12 that season, one of the worst records in franchise history.

Spielman replaces Fran Foley, who was fired after three months on the job following a controversy about inaccuracies on his resume and a draft that got mixed reviews.

Now the Vikings have their own "expert insider" to make their personnel decisions. Expect Spielman to offer Miami a 2nd round pick for Marcus Vick shortly.  Roll Eyes

Either that or Spielman will pony up another 2nd rounder and send it to San Diego for A.J. Feeley.  Actually, it wouldn't surprise me given Feeley's history with Childress.  The Vikings are really starting to look like the Dolphins of 2004.  A caretaker at quarterback, no clear cut answer at running back, an inept head coach, and now an incompetent GM.  There is no way the people of Minnesota will be willing to finance a new stadium for this team now.

I think it is a bit early to call Childress inept. This is his first head coaching job and he was dealt a losing hand so far.

well based on how unprofessional and immature he has been already, it doesnt seem like he can succeed as an NFL coach.

Man, if only the Vikes hired him four months ago.  We could've gotten Daunte for a seventh rounder in 2010.
