On a weekend where the Dolphins' staff played host to fan-site administrators from around the country, the team also hosted the Tennessee Titans. And they couldn't have made for a worse ending to an amazing weekend.
This weekend was the Miami Dolphins' 9th annual Web Weekend. Each fall, the Dolphins invite fan-site administrators to enjoy some insider access to the team, tour the facilities, and do some charity work. This year, we packed over 110 boxes of food and health and beauty items to be sent to troops in Afghanistan. We all worked together for a noble cause in honor of Veterans Day. Afterwards, we were treated to dinner and informative Q&A sessions from equipment manager Joe Cimino, Jeff Ireland, Mike Dee, and Dolphins' legend Jim Kiick. The weekend ended with field-level passes to watch the Titans vs Dolphins game from the old Marlins' third-base dugout.
Unfortunately, the players were the only ones who forgot to show up.
The Dolphins suffered their worst home loss since 1968 on this Sunday, falling to the Titans by 34 a point margin. In the process, they shattered their 22-game streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher, by allowing Chris Johnson to rush for 126 yards and a score on 23 carries. In fact, the past 44 games, the Dolphins have allowed exactly 5 runners to surpass the century mark, and 3 of those performances were by Chris Johnson.
But there were so many more factors contributing to the Dolphins' thumping on this day. Not only did the league's #5 rushing defense give up 177 yards on the ground, but the Dolphins were outmatched in almost every aspect of the game. As well as the Dolphins played just 2 weeks ago against the Jets, the Dolphins played as poorly against the Titans.
Turnovers: Its NFL cliche to say "you have to win the turnover battle." But it remains to be absolutely true. The Dolphins gave the Titans the ball 4 times on Sunday (including one for a touchdown), and didn't take it from them once. The first turnover, a fumble by Reggie Bush, got him benched for the first half. Ryan Tannehill played his worst game since Week 1, throwing three interceptions on the day.
Penalties: The Dolphins suffered from numerous costly penalties, including several holding calls, three "block in the back" fouls on nice kick returns, and some untimely personal fouls. In all, the Dolphins tallied 7 penalties for 67 yards, but none bigger than Richie Incognito's personal foul negating a 14-yard Daniel Thomas run that turned a 1st down in the red zone to a 1st and 25 on the 43 yard line. In addition, the team that went nearly 3 games without an offensive holding penalty was called 3 times for holding. When you consider the yardage gained that was negated by penalties, the Dolphins lost 93 yards due to undisciplined, sloppy play in this game.
Offense: The Miami offense only entered the red zone 1 time, running 3 plays inside the 20, and only 13 plays on the Titans' half of the field all game. They were generally ineffective and, with their best offensive playmaker on the bench for most of the first half, they were simply outmatched by the Titans usually-porous defense.
Defense: This was Miami's biggest disappointment. Miami is ranked 25th in the league against the pass, but 5th against the run. But on this day, it was Chris Johnson's legs that would torch the Dolphins.
In all, the Dolphins weren't playing Dolphins' football that day. Undisciplined, sloppy football where crisp and clean is the normal routine. A team with marginal talent can't win games with this sloppy play. They need to be more focused, and execute to perfection. This game brought the Dolphins back down to earth, and should give the fans a little perspective. It effectively ended any discussion of playoff hopes for this season, and reminds us all that we're still a young team building for the future.
But, still, this trouncing couldn't have come at a worse time. The first of 2 games in 5 days, the Dolphins have to quickly reroute their focus towards preparation for this Thursday's game against the Buffalo Bills. For the sake of the sanity of Dolphins' Nation, let's hope the team can bounce back, and put this dismal performance behind them.
